Can I do anything to nudge them into expediting the processing?

I would give them a call and ask for an explanation. Play it by ear, but a couple of lines you might want to pop into the conversation:

"We're trying to decide whether we should just go ahead and file a refund suit."

"What interest rate are you paying nowadays?"

I also suggest you order account transcripts for the two years in question. I'm pretty sure you can do that online.
