Is there a way around purchasing this extra state module... do part of the return manually or am I stuck...

Did you check the MN state website to see if he really has to file for MN?

If he doesn't have to file, did they withhold enough in MN state income tax that it's worth filing?

If it is, or he has to file, did you check to see if he can file electronically through the state of MN without having to buy the TurboTax state return? Or how hard it would be to file manually? Or you could let him take the responsibility for doing his own taxes and just ask him to let you check the taxes before he sends them in. That way he could decide if it was worth it to buy the MN state module.
