Is there any consensus on what is the best cash back credit card?

One size does not fit all.

There are many cards with rotating 5% cash back categories that you sign up for quarterly. These categories work well for some people, but tend to be for things I don't want to buy anyway. Or for things I buy so seldom that I won't remember to use the 5% special instead of the 2% on everything card.

There are some attractive cash back cards that only come in VISA. Sam's Club doesn't take VISA, so I stick with a cash back MasterCard for Sam's. Straight 1% back isn't great, but it's been stable for a long time. And Citi gives me virtual credit card numbers, which let me limit my exposure for online shopping, paying bills by writing a card number on a piece of paper I mail back, and recurring charges.

For purchases with a swipe, I use a Fidelity Amex for the 2% cash back. Cash goes into my Fidelity brokerage account, so this one is a non-starter if you don't want to have an account with Fidelity. The underlying bank is FIA Card Services, which is part of BoA. The one thing I wish it had was BoA's version of virtual card numbers (ShopSafe, I think). But it doesn't have them, so this card doesn't get used online. And it can't be used at merchants who don't take Amex.

Other Fools report good results with various Amex cards that pay a high amount back, after a ramp-up. The ramp-up is a show stopper for me.

You just have to know how you will use the card, then evaluate the terms for your card charging habits. The best card for you might not be the best card for me.
