It has nothing to do with being purebred, but high empahsis on teeth cleaning is a trend in feline dental care for the last 5+ years or so.

It is HIGHLY variable per cat. My parents have two alley cats. One needs his teeth cleaned every year, the other has yet to have it done. A lot depends on how well their own saliva works to clean their teeth.

Teeth cleaning *is* important because bad teeth and gums leads to a lot of other infections. When you thinkabout all the icky things cats eat (and clean!), their mouth is a ripe place for infection to enter their system, and that is easiest done with bleeding gums and cavities.
