It might have been a mistake in the quote or, more likely just an aftermarket quote? After the close on the New York Stock Exchange, you will still see quotes (from various sources) showing the bid/ask on the Pacific exchange and some sort of order imbalance--this is probably what you witnessed. If there were some news after the close, you may have seen a negative reaction--this is all just a guess on my part. You are correct in that you normally wouldn't see a 6 point spread on a NYSE listed security because the specialist is there to make sure there is a fair and orderly market. Now if you see that happen when the market is opened, you CAN worry!
