It really depends on where you live. The cheapest gym I've been able to find in my city is around $65 per month plus initiation. I now pay $69 per month and signed up without an initiation fee. I'm thinking of checking out the Y, I think they're the only gym in the area that offers a family plan.

Check out your health insurance. Some companies (I believe Blue Cross/Blue Shield is one) get group discount rates and/or discount your health insurance premiums if you belong to a gym. In addition, your employer, office building, or other affiliation may get a group discount. When you find a gym you like ask to see their group discount list.
