It takes time and effort to prepare good food. People who work all day and then have to deal with kids when they get home may not be in the mood to expend either. This may be exacerbated by the fact that, while cooking is easy, doing it properly requires a bit of knowledge and is helped by some half-way decent tools. (Remembering my receptionist complaining that her spaghetti always stuck together and then my correctly guessing that the pot she was using was way too small). Recipes are generally pretty easy to follow, but do require attention to detail and decent reading comprehension.
