It's not generally known that the American Flag is based on the original Washington family crest. This was shown on a British Antiques Road Show TV episode when the cast toured the Washington estate in England, Sulgrave Manor.

Just above the door is the Washington family’s coat of arms carved in stone. Known as the “mullets and bars” with three stars over two stripes, it is widely believed to have served as the inspiration for the American flag.

It's red and white (missing the blue field) but Stars and Stripes are there.

In a sense, when we pledge allegiance to the American flag, we are acknowledging our debt to George Washington.
