Rome (the old part)can be done in a few days,as a new traveler,I wouldn't spent a week. Driving a car in Italy is: OK north of Bolonga, scary south of there and impossible in Rome. Take Trains everywhere, lots of walking however, may be a problem for 80y/o Buk
My info is from 1988, and could be out of date. But when we were there, bus tours were numerous to almost everywhere. Walk to the famous American Express office to get their tours with excellent English. The hotel would call for you, but then another operator would show up, pick you up at the hotel and do a multilingual bus tour--not quite as good.
