It's dangerous enough to be put out by an anesthesiologist sitting right next to your head while in an operating room. I don't think there's a way to deliver a gas to a room full of people that will be effective against a 200 lb man and not kill the 3 yr old girl in the seat 2 rows behind him. Is that an acceptable situation?

You are correct in principle, but it turns out the partial pressure of an anesthetic vapor to put 50% of the healthy population to sleep is the same for the man as it is the child. In fact, children usually require more.

However, the partial pressure to put 100% of healthy passengers to sleep would endanger the lives of those who have a variety of medical conditions. It also would endanger the lives of passengers who are taking certain medication. The discussion of which are far beyond the scope of this post.

Interesting idea, but you are right foolabaisse, most impractical.
