It's not inconceivable that the company might benefit from some sort of fundamental innovation--it certinaly did with Chick-n-Quick. But at its current mass, such innovations would bring very small incremental improvements to the bottom line. It's not like Intel offering a new chip.

Granted Tyson is going to have a small impact in getting into other venues. Still, they are a company that really should. When your stock is pretty much where it was a dozen years ago, and you aren't really paying much of a divident, you are a company that needs to look at improving margin.

Given their buisness, they really aren't going to do it with increasing sales. There appears to be no margin. So it is either hope the price of beef and chicken improves or move into areas that are higher margin.

Serving a higher market, with the same basic guidelines seems like a natural move, not every move needs to take the entire company IMO, and control of the shelves makes their ability to put things on the shelves better than competitors. So, though I respect your expertice, Mr. Market says Tyson is doing something not so well, yes they are fighting a headwind(beef & chicken problems), but even minor improvements or small matters of new higher profit margin products without really veering off-course makes sense to me. The 'gourmet; venue is someplace IMO, it is insane not to be, as serving higher level consumers is where every commodity company needs to have a piece of the action.
