It's so nice to read something from someone who is totally satisfied with their life and financial situation without obsessing about it!

I lurk here at times, so forgive me for jumping in.

If I were in your shoes, I would max out your 401(K) for the tax benefits, if nothing else. Crunch some numbers to make sure you will have enough for college. You don't say how many kids you have or how old they are, but saving $6000/year for them may or may not be enough for your situation. The home upgrades make sense, too, if you aren't over-improving for your area. You will enjoy your house more and it won't be money down the drain.

Other than that, you can give your kids the best education by traveling. It isn't as cheap as staying at home, but it's so worth it. For example, if you plan ahead, you can get inexpensive flights to Europe. Find a rental apartment online and you have it made! My in-laws rent out an apartment in Germany for something like 30 Euros a day (I'm not advertising -- just saying how cheaply you can stay if you plan ahead). You can use public transportation or rent a car, which isn't as expensive as it used to be (for a small car). Kids really benefit from the exposure to other cultures and languages and will need that knowledge when they enter the business world.

Experiences are worth far more than toys, and time is something that you never get back, so enjoy it while you've got it.

Have fun!
