In the Finns case I once read that wireless actually saves them a lot of cash due to their sparse spread out population. It saves them the cash of wiring up a lot of out of the way places where the weather and conditions are such that (at least in winter) breaks would be difficult to imposssible to repair.

Translation: someone in finland thought ahead and realized that wireless was going to be the better investment for them. The result is that today NOK is such a great investment - tho that is perhaps oversimplified... Just another thougth to throw on the fire, tho I agree GSM as a standard has been the biggest help.
