The new government in Japan is going in a completely different direction with regard to nuclear power. The old government wanted to shut down all of the power plants. The new prime minister wants to build new plants.

"They will be completely different from those at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant," he told the national television network TBS.

"With public understanding, we will be building anew," Mr. Abe said.

Finally, someone understands that not all nuclear plants have to be the same. The Fukushima Daiichi plants had their meltdowns because the emergency diesel generators failed. So the obvious answer is to build plants that don't require diesel generators to keep the reactor cores from overheating. There are several designs that would do the job, with at least two of those designs owned or partially owned by Hitachi and Toshiba.
