Many years ago when I was starting my business, as a flea market vendor, I had an epiphany: now that I was no longer in the Army or working for some civilian company; I could choose who I associated with at work. As my flea market business grew to eight spaces, then a rented store, then two, then my own large standalone store I eschewed the company of losers: people I didn't like or didn't trust. The policy served me well, I'm now retired, but maintaining my "avoid losers" policy.

Years later Rush Limbaugh canonized my concept on air with his oft stated advice to callers seeking the secret of success: (paraphrasing here)

To be successful in business associate with people who are doing what you want to do, not with the myriad of envious losers who detract from the winners.

To be successful in personal life hang out with the people whose attributes, activities and achievements you admire, not with the losers who criticize them.

Rush has said the above many times in many ways, but that's the gist of it.

Let's see; Joe made his fortune and retired early. He bought his house where he wanted to live, not where he could afford to buy. He's engaging in a lifestyle filled with leisure, toys and friends many, if not most, would envy. And he displays wit and talent that it is evident some here at HURL envy.

So with all day to play, and plenty agreeable people to play with, why should Joe put up with the tribe of envious ankle biters here at HURL?

If Joe chooses not to reenter HURL's minefield of cow flop who could blame him?

Would it be a victory of the averagE over averag excellence? Or a wise man choosing to enjoy life rather than engage in endless debate with sanctimonious green eyed midgets?

As for myself, I'm sticking with my policy: Associate with Winners, Avoid Losers.

Hasta la vista, babies!

PS
I wrote the above a week ago and let it sit to be sure it was how I felt after I'd cooled down. It is. The only thing I can ad is that it's easy to see why a winner like averagjoe would choose not to associate with losers. Because, you see, not allowing oneself to be drawn into petty contests that detract from the pursuit of one's goal is one of the reasons averagjoe is a winner. Enjoy your rich (body, soul and material success) retirement Joe, it's more than your envious detractors will ever achieve.

Well said Dave.

I wonder if TMF even cares that Fools are leaving because of all this?

Thanks Dave,

I've tried to post the same sentiments but failed miserably. This is not about Joe; geeze wake and smell the coffee folks. This is about letting 'weenies' (a polite term) control your life, what you see, what you read, and, at the end of the day, what you think. Even TMFOtter, generally a bright guy, missed it. Joe is what highlights the affliction. I'm still in contact with Joe, so I care not what the board does in his situation. This board's malaise has little to do with Joe, other than bringing it to a head.

I claim this board might actually model our society in general. Isn't it painfully obvious how our society is going downhill as we continue to become sheep? Virtually everything that made America great is in retreat and we'll letting it happen. Point out how our continued free thinking brain drain is connected to the continual creep of PC, liberalism, and socialism in our society only gets branded as political clap-trap or religious whining. Well sheep go willingly to slaughter and never even see it coming too.

Obviously this board is not going to change the world, but it does reflect on our society and just like society in general, it is plain that we are not well nor are we moving in the right direction. Nor do many even 'get it'. Certainly not the TMF staff.

And to top it off, we get TMFCheese being trotted out as to prove the board is off-kilter and needs cleaning up. Which is hilarious since Cheese is the perfect example of a PC, socialist, prig of a person and is the last person a thinking person would want to model oneself after. Yeow. PC first raised its ugly head on this board and things seriously began going downhill with the appearance of Cheese-- hmm.....

Well I can agree with you on some things related to that, brother. But speech ain't never been free'er. Remember when George Carlin said there are 7 words you can't say on tv?

Well, now, you can.

So that's your idea of demonstrating what you think America should stand for? Insulting one of the more respected posters on TMF?

Well that's going to win over people.

It's actually called progress when you learn to respect your fellow humans.

Are you so suggestible that you can't control what posts you choose to read and the impact that they will have on your thinking?

You know, I can't even remember the last time I FA'd a post. Years ago. I pretty much am a live and let live type of user.

But this is the only board where following links consistently leads to stuff that could get me fired from work. Videos of people being shot/killed, sexually provocative photos, racist stuff. It might be ok if people would label things NSFW. Hell, I can go read fark.com or somethingawful.com and people have sense enough there to label stuff if it isn't work safe. I can't believe the forums at a financial site are the ones where it's dangerous!

The fact that you attribute this to being PC or liberal to me says that you're not thinking clearly. Come on.

Ooh, thank you for some new leads, I didn't see anything horrible on either site, in fact I found much of it very interesting so thanks!

You have two problems:

But this is the only board where following links consistently leads to stuff that could get me fired from work

Should you be doing this at work?

I can't believe the forums at a financial site are the ones where it's dangerous!

You don't view the Humor board as a financial site? Do you?

I don't understand this mentality which has been expressed here many times. It seems to me that one should be working when at work, and could be fired for going to any board and basically goofing off on their time.

However their employers might. That was my point. It is interesting how people (hypocrites) can jump on AJ for his "crimes" when they are cheating their employer themselves. Which is the bigger wrong? It reminds me of a fellow who used to pay his bills with checks that had bible quotes printed on them to show you how religious he was and send them in an envelop with his employers name and address crossed out on it. Of course he wouldn't think he was stealing. I used to get a good laugh every time I received payment.

I can't speak for all companies but I work for a large one and they shut off sites like this during work hours but open it up at lunchtime which is right now (I'm having a Schlotzsky's sandwich...yum) so no, they don't mind us being here, so what's the problem?
