A fascinating writer, from Portugal. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1998.

His themes are usualy how the increasingly authoritarian society has a detrimental effect on its citizens, until they find some way to thwart that effect.

Beautifully written. I am currently reading "The Cave." Check out "Blindness" and "All the Names" for a marvelous read. He's written about 10 novels so if you like his writing, there are many treats in store.
