Just contact the custodian and tell them what you want to do. There's a formula they use for computing the earnings on the contribution, and the earnings are recharacterized along with the contribution. They have all the forms you need, and you don't have to report anything about the Roth intermediate step on your return.

I just completed the recharacterization for my wife's IRA, with the exception of her signature. She has to sign it in person. It was painless and took only about 20 minutes.
