Hoya has an interesting article on Seeking Alpha that explores your question a bit:

REITS are a bit of a conundrum presently. Even the Preferred shares are relatively expensive in my mind.

A couple of names I'm kicking around are PEI and GPMT, Pensylvaina (a mall REIT with alll of that baggage, and Granite Point, a mortgage REIT with interest rate risk. Redeeming factor on both IMHO is price.

Just a couple thoughts.
