Like father-in-law, like son-in-law... according to Jared Kushner the Russian government's illegal actions to influence the 2016 election -- meddling that helped to elect Donald Trump -- was no big deal and their spending was inconsequential. But the investigation into how and what the Russians did was harmful. Hhmmm... the Mueller Report said Russia "interfered in the 2016 presidential election in sweeping and systematic fashion." But the advertising money spent by Russia was a minor element in a social media campaign that included hundred of accounts, which Facebook said were used to make 80,000 posts reaching as many as 126 million people.80,000 posts. 126 million people. Russians distributed propaganda masquerading as news to 126 million Facebook users that garnered 13 million shares, 15 million likes, and 1.3 million comments. That's inconsequential? Russians targeted black voters in key states with anti-Clinton messages and black voter turnout fell for the first time in 20 years. That's inconsequential? And like father-in-law who said "I have President Putin. He just said it's not Russia. I will say this: I don't see any reason why it would be," son-in-law Kushner said "Quite frankly, the whole thing's just a big distraction for the country."Mueller's report also said Russia's effort to sway the election in Trump's favor included the use of military intelligence operatives who stole emails from Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign officials. "Russians targeted black voters in key states with anti-Clinton messages and black voter turnout fell for the first time in 20 years."The Russian may have done enough to flip the election but not in the vein of the argument you are making. Black voter turnout was very likely to fall in 2016 given that Black voters no longer had a Black presidential candidate to vote for. Add to that, Mrs. Clinton's unhappy history with Black voters in the 2008 primaries and her general lack of pizazz. Neither Black voters nor Sanders voters (another group that gets a finger pointed at them) were particularly concerned with the Clinton server nor "Benghazi! Benghazi! Benghazi!". Nor are either of these groups the type to get their news from social media. The Russian postings, to the extent they had an effect, did more to gin up excitement on the right than to depress turnout on the left.Add to that the increasing number of Republican-sponsored voter suppression laws, Mrs. Clinton's decision to essentially not campaign in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota (losing the first 2 and almost losing Minnesota as well even though no dem had lost those states in 30 years), and the DNC's decision to rig the dem primary which resulted in 3 Million fewer democratic votes in the 2016 primaries than in 2008. Nate Silver came to the same conclusion. It is possible that the Russians did just enough to flip the election given everything the Democrats did to lose to the most unpopular Republican candidate ever.Certainly, the US does not want the Russians interfering in our elections. However, blaming 2016 on the Russians whilst ignoring the long list of mistakes Democrats made in that election will only get Trump re-elected.V.
