Key reason:Low Pay.
https://mattstoller.substack.com/p/the-truck-driver-shortage...

Why did pay collapse so much? It’s simple. Policy. The Motor Carrier Act of 1980, pushed by Jimmy Carter, ended price regulation for trucking, which had upheld the bargaining power of trucking firms and drivers in a highly cyclical industry. The goal of public price setting wasn’t just about wages, it was also about stabilizing our transportation system and making sure that massive booms and busts didn’t drive too many people or capital assets in and out of the industry.

Conservatives and liberals in the 1970s however decided that this system was a cartel causing inflation, and so set about to destroy it. This destruction started with Richard Nixon, but it was completed by Democrat Jimmy Carter. In the 1970s, left-wing economist Alfred Kahn justified Jimmy Carter’s various deregulatory proposals, which included the Motor Carrier Act, with the very simple statement, “I’d love to see the Teamsters to be worse off.”

And so they are. And we are now all reaping the whirlwind.

Another factor is the last of the baby boomers are reaching retirement age. Remember the post war baby boom. Many families had three or four kids. But then came the pill, working women, and small family size.

Pre World War I, the day of the horse population density in rural areas was 30/sq mile. Smaller family size and mechanization can take us to less than 2 per sq mile. In Missouri some rural counties were down to 8 per sq mile in 2010.

Those large families provided lots of local manpower.

Raising the birth rate looks not very promising. Subsidizing child care might help.

We need immigration reform with allowance for more with need ed job skills.

Also automation has eliminated many competing jobs. And sometime in the future many of the trucking driving jobs will be eliminated.

Cheers

How can that be? Birth rates have declined significantly.

How can that be? Birth rates have declined significantly.

The WW2 generational large families; thus resulting in the Baby Boomer generation that is 3.5 times the size of the WW2 generation*. The reduced birth rates have resulted in succeeding generations roughly the same size as the Baby Boomer generation. Americans have been replacing themselves. Adding in immigration the US population is rising a smidgeon.

I've included 2 link to articles about US stagnating population.

We need an average birthrate of 2.1 per woman to maintain our current population. We have been below that figure for a long time.

Your population numbers indicate immigration is making up the difference and allowing a bit of population growth.
