I only hope I have outlined my wishes in case I can't make the call to my wife and family. It's easy to say what you would do before you are there. None of us really will know until we reach that bridge.

My wife also has vision issues and I have a family history of dementia. We comment that we should hide a supply of morphine and Ativan to help us when the time comes. But joke that she won't be able to see to find them and I'll forget where we hid them.......

Thank you for your input. You are probably aware of the many options to influence one's own independence in end-of-life conditions. One that I'm recommending more and more because of its legal status and use across state lines is POLST.

What is POLST? The National POLST Paradigm is an approach to end-of-life planning based on conversations between patients, loved ones, and health care professionals designed to ensure that seriously ill or frail patients can choose the treatments they want or do not want and that their wishes are documented and honored.

DW is a member of the Institute of Medicine and among their many data-based studies is this recent report on those end-of-life issues:

This is free downloadable in PDF form.

I'd also suggest a conversation using the "Five Wishes" document, which I have used.

Good topic. Sensitive topic.

OT and bragging: DW's study with the IOM (not the one linked) is the most downloaded and used in the history of the IOM. Broke their system when it was released.
