Laminate really is amazingly cheap. If you have a "complicated" situation like an L, then maybe it's gets more tricky. I say "complicated" because I'm sure the experts probably don't find putting together seams to be all that difficult.

I was lucky enough to find a 3'X 20' roll of the exact laminate pattern I had already picked out as a 'green label' (special order return) at Home Depot for $40. I redid my whole kitchen for the cost of the laminate, a laminate bit (I think it was about $15), and some contact cement. Probably was the biggest bang for my buck home improvement project I've ever done (aside from fresh paint, I guess).
