I read on Yahoo that Michael Phelps will not race tomorrow, so tonight is the last chance to watch him race. I really hate it when the swimming portion of the games comes to an end.

I love it.

That means the track is about to start.

OK, what is the triple jump?

I don't really watch field and track, but it has been mentioned so much I just have to know.

OK, I haven't kept up on the swimming, but what did he do?

He gave his spot in the final men's relay to Ian Crocker (I think!) to give him a chance at another medal.

He gave up his spot in the 4x100 Medley Relay to Ian Crocker. The two are rivals and apparently Michael has had Crocker's picture on his bedroom wall after Crocker beat him in the 100 meter butterfly.

It was an extremely classy thing to do, and a very rare thing to happen.

And here's an op/ed piece on it (again, free registration required)

The most gallant athlete at these Games so far is one who, were he a different sort of person, might consider himself disappointed. Phelps lost his bid for a record eight gold medals early in the Games when he was part of a relay team that got upset in the 4x100 freestyle relay and finished third. He did not brood or sulk or blame his teammates. Rather, he has gone on to win five gold medals. Friday night after winning the gold in the 100 butterfly, earning a spot in the 4x100 medley relay, Phelps yielded that spot to Crocker, so that Crocker can have a shot at a gold medal.

Get a running start, and see how far you can get in three straight jumps. They use a real funny-looking first couple of jumps, so what you end up getting is the old "hop-skip-and-a-jump" looking routine.

Its nuts to watch, and I can't even imagine trying to do it.
