Learning from my experience, perhaps you could sign up with one of the credit monitoring services so you can check on your balances without a hard inquiry being reported. Any inquiries via a consumer service such as "MyFICO" by Experian are "soft" inquiries.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was planning on doing this anyway but hearing stories from the trenches definitely helps with the decision making process.
