Let me wax poetic and say coal is the devil's fuel. Seductive because there is a huge supply and it's cheap when you don't go to the effort to clean it up. But in order to get anywhere *close* to the cleanliness of natural gas, you must add tons of expensive equipment to your plant. And dammit, some of it exists only on the drawing board as yet.

Recent news about utilities wanting federal or state guarantees in order to invest in "clean coal" model plants, point to a cost level which may be bettered by nuclear. We have lots of experience with nukes, we have historical numbers to measure capital cost from the better builders. I believe Duke Energy built several at a cost of $2000/kw, at a time when others were experiencing overruns up to $3000/kw or higher.

Face it, coal kills people in a wide variety of ways, to a much greater degree than nuclear or NG technology. We just accept it because of the way coal has been used for hundreds of years. We have some choices, some are cheap dirty and lethal, some are expensive in order to be clean.
