let's get useful work done rather than having Walmart, McDonalds etc. be subsidized.

That is a common fallacy. Additionally, such a policy would be highly regressive. You would be pulling assets from the working poor in order to fund those higher wages. The rich don't shop at Walmart and McDonalds. Those wages would be paid for by higher prices for the customers.

An Earned Income Tax Credit would be paid for via a progressive tax system.
