Like most "aged" fliers I am extemely familiar with StEx. He is a marvelous writer and conveyed the feelings of flight quite well. My favorite passage is his description of a seaplane taking off. One of my writings that was heavily influenced by him is as follows:

THESE FLYING MEN

This flying business belongs to men who fight,
Who are able to bear its heavy load;
And their business is with stars, with night,
And danger flung rampant across their road.
Their fight is with the wind and with the storm.
They wait at dawn, like lovers for the spring.
Alone into the sky; their hearts grow warm
And find the truth in what the stars will sing.
The ship take us away from the mournful cry
Of common men, and lets us do battle with the sky.
