The International Olympic Committee has announced that if an athlete protests for racial equality, they will face punishment and could be sent home from the games.

“Any athlete sanctioned by the Tokyo Olympics will have the full backing of the World Players,” Brendan Schwab, executive director of the World Players Association union, told the AP.

So what are they going to do when the athletes wait until their particular event has concluded?

Bar them from the Closing Ceremonies, I guess. For some, that's a big deal. For others, they are already on their way home.

The thing is, with practically no audience allowed for events (other than those locals who can afford tickets), any actions by the athletes would primarily be for the home country cameras anyway. It's just the IOC courting controversy instead of embracing the social justice message sweeping the globe.

Who thinks they could have been more effective if they had seized the message and molded it it into a form that benefited their Olympic legacy rather then letting athletes define the message and the Olympics being painted as trampling on the free expression rights of the athletes the organization claims to serve...
