As investors, and would-be investors, the future is all we have.

And America's current dreams will not all be fulfilled; and Islamic fundamentalists will not have all theirs fulfilled either.

The next twenty years will need Australia's interests to be identified separately from the US's, even if we continue to cooperate.

I'm expecting the US will be changed, but we can't know whether it will move towards European pragmatism, or towards fundamentalist America-first aggression. But China may have the key to that. A resurgent China active openly in the world will curb US madness. (It will be so busy, it won't have the energy to interfere elsewhere.)

While US money has flowed back to the US through this, I expect it will finally flow out to Europe, China, Japan, and western-style financial markets - Singapore, Australia, Korea, others - if US growth slows longterm.

Whether US growth can be sustained above that of other large investment markets is the main question in the five to ten year term.
