Yes, prior to 1997. I would look at this from the POV that most folks would be more than happy to have a windfall of 30k even if they had to pay taxes on it. If it makes you feel any better, I would say that the majority of people who sell a home after living in it for only 6 months do not turn a net profit.

As for moving right next door to your mother-in-law, I think an awful lot of people would consider that to be a "fate worse than death". Hopefully, YMMV and none of these people will turn out to be like the Barone family members. <grin>
