<<Greta, since you are a rebater, did you do anything with Cyberrebates? It's a shame that people got taken the way they did. I imagine most of them were doing what a buddy and I have done in the cheap and sell on ebay.>>

No, I haven't ever been on Cyberrebates. I don't usually go for rebates if I have to buy something (except for my credit card rebates, of course).

I haven't tried to close or move money out of Fidelity. It's a very small account: I simply transferred a mutual fund there, got my $100 added, and haven't touched the account since, so they haven't made a penny off me yet.

I have several online brokers. Started with Datek, but they didn't have IRAs back then, so I opened an Etrade account. Later I moved my IRA to Brown & Co. They offer very basic service, and their website isn't as sophisticated as some, but they're also very cheap (Market orders are $5.00). I'm a mechanical investor, so I do a lot of trading in that account.

btw-how did you get that $400 for your laptop at Etrade? Do you know if the offer is still available? and what brand does it apply to?
