That's just fine for the college educated time the time, intelligence and resources to explore the world of philosophy and assemble a workable collection of personal values.

Perhaps 5% of the population could do that, if they were motivated to do so. Many are not.

The big advantage of religion is that it is capable of indoctrinating large parts of the population with officially accepted cultural and behavioral values.

Of course, liberals are often hostile to indoctrinating people through religion these days, preferring to use public schools and public school teachers to indoctrinate populations rather than religion.

But it comes down to the same thing.
