<<Recently I read of a company paying a 3:1 split. However the article stated it was "a 3:1 stock split announced in the form of a 200% stock dividend".
What does this mean? Will the shares be distributed three for every one you own? or what?>>

I think you're interpreting it correctly. You'll end up with three times (200%) the number of shares.
