<<What does the surprise mean in eps>>

When companies report their quarterly earnings, you'll typically see numbers for sales, net income, and net income (i.e. earnings) per share -- EPS. Among many numbers.

Well, the investment community is often eager to see these numbers, as they'll reveal how the company is doing. Analysts on Wall Street (and elsewhere) issue theur estimates of what the EPS will be. And "consensus" estimates are often published.

So you might read that Company ABC is expected to report EPS of $0.77 on Thursday. If it actually reports $0.79, then there was a two-cent "surprise."

Surprises are just when companies report earnings greater or less than expected.
