You DID put 17,000 miles on them ? IF the tires are rated for 80K, that's darn near 25% so you can kinda figure that the single new tire will be almost 25% less worn than the 3 remaining tires.

That's starting to get into "big difference" territory for a AWD system.

Take the car into a proper Tire Shop and see if they can come up with a solution that you will like any better.
