South Carolina has the highest number of new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people of any state in the country in the past week.

The trends among new pediatric cases of COVID-19 are of particular concern to the state's Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Dr. Jonathan Knoche, DHEC Medical Consultant, says that since Aug. 21 of this year, the 11 to 20 age group has recorded the highest number of new cases in the state. The second highest group are those aged 0 to 10.

..."Many of these cases are among those who are too young to get vaccinated, so they are relying on parents or siblings and the rest of the eligible population in their community to protect them through vaccinations and masking and other safety protocols."

..."There was a good study, a good model that has been put out by researchers in North Carolina and Georgia that says if kids in schools were consistently wearing face masks, they could avert 50% of the cases that we think could occur otherwise."

DHEC reports that the August 30th report from South Carolina's Children's Hospital Collaborative...shows 35 children were hospitalized due to complications related to COVID-19, and four of those children are relying on ventilators to breathe.
