Maybe the party that controls the State Legislature really controls things.

Nope I did not say that
I said the best result was when you had a democratic governor with a republican controlled legislature. Why this should be so I have no idea, but the set is so small that I would guess that it is statistically insignificant.

What I did suggest was that a population density was more significant than leadership. The two are linked in that democrats tent to govern the states with the largest population clusters. The reason I believe that this is more significant is that higher population has more interconnected parts and this is more sensitive to disruption and I believe that this is more significant than anything the governor or legislature does with respect to unemployment.

So in the spirit of ignoring the inconvenient facts, the economy under democratic leadership has far outperformed the same under republican leadership. Since the onset of the modern economy that is post WWII that factor is approaching 200%. Conclusion, republicans are terrible at managing the economy
