Maybe we should look at the whole process as a vectoring of several factors - wanting to retire, needing to retire and being able to do so financially and emotionally. It's hard to deal with the first two unless the last two are in place.

In addition to financial independence, the ability to deal with the transition to a different lifestyle, however pleasant, is critical to its success.
