Merriam Webster is a dictionary, and has a much stronger definition than simple "solemn respect".

: expressing or characterized by reverence : worshipful

I agree that reverent has a supernatural connotation.

Remember, too, that "reverend" is a very common title used when addressing a member of the clergy, especially in Protestantism.
