There are more extreme building solutions possible, but they are not ready for "prime time." Underground home? Super-insulated? Sure, if you build it yourself. Does it make any sense to heat (or cool) the entire 2000 (3000, 4000, etc.) sq. ft. of a home? Of course not, it's completely insane. But it what the typical buyer expects.

I'm sure there will be plenty of people preening about their use of CFL bulbs in the light sockets of the 4000 square foot home they have for two parents and two children.
