Mike:"And what does a self driving car do when the left turn signal light fails? Only make right turns? Pull over to the curb and call someone to fix it -- wow, what an expensive repair call for a $2-$3 light bulb.
What do we do today? Use hands signals until you can go to an auto store (most people, of course just drive without it unknowingly)"

I'd bet that 90% of the people out there have no clue what hand signals are. You'd be wasting your time.

In a few years, we'll have LED bulbs everywhere on the car to save energy and they last 100,000 hours or longer than the car will exist.

Lots of cars already have LED tail lights.

If I'm in a right or left turn lane, I note half the folks there don't bother to've already 'signaled' your intentions by being in the turn lane.

Not a big deal.

I'd bet half the folks driving today wouldn't even know if a turn signal light went out. Even if their clicker sounded funny. Not until they had to get the car inspected and failed.
