Got lots of warnings from other sources, including owners, mostly about the price of parts and repairs, so I was able to talk the kid out of it.

Good idea! I had one for a short time, it rode rough and the "fun" factor didn't last long (it was a convertible). Everyone though it was "cute", but I started to dislike driving it.
