Can anyone give me a little more insight into market makers? For example, a step by step from me placing an order through my broker to how it exactly gets filled would be great. What happens if the broker isn't themselves a market maker--does an order sometimes get filled by several market makers? Do market makers have to maintain a certain number of shares of the stocks that they make a market in? Do they only really make money on the spread? All these things and more would be greatly appreciated if answered.

Thanks so much

--Any information on specialists and opening prices and after market spreads etc would also be greatly appreciated!
