Mom, that was my gripe when I contributed to a couple Roth 401k's in a previous life. The 401k brokerage wasn't very good at showing what is what, and even worse, there was no distinction between contribution types when downloading into Quicken. But they do track it, and in my case, if I dug into the transaction detail on the brokerage's web site, I was able to manually track the two types of transactions. It's not pretty but it works.

Who expects if DS ever wanted to withdraw funds or roll his 401k over to another 401k or IRA, the brokerage would make sure he knows what can go into a Roth IRA or 401k or a Traditional IRA or 401k...
