Moneyhoche asked:

How do you see fuel cells effecting the market for HTS wire?....Do any of you see this as a threat to power grid improvements, namely AMSC's current and future products?

Actually, the possible emergence of economical distributed generation technology (H2FC, microturbines etc.) poses a long term threat to the entire traditional electric industry, of which AMSC's product line is intended to serve.

All of AMSC's present and future product lines, with the exception of HTS-based motors, are designed to improve the reliability or capacity of electric power transmission. The concept of distributed generation removes the transmission part from the equation, that is, the generation source is moved directly to the load (consumer). This potentially effects not only AMSC, but the numerous de-regulated merchant generators who are poised to invest many, many Billions in new capacity additions to the bulk power systems.

To quantify the impact on the industry and AMSC the big question is (for which I don't have an answer): Will distributed generation (specifically H2FC) become economically feasible or at least economical enough to be justified as a reliability solution?

In any event, the impact of distributed generation is a years away and is unlikely to ever wholly replace the bulk power system (at least in my lifetime). However, it is poised to potentially steal away from the industry the "premium" dollars that can be derived from transmission congestion and reliability issues. Something to watch and think about.
