More info on the inaugural Atlas V launch from a friend who wrote me and said that our little camera, as seen from the ground, is shown at:
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

"The first launch of an Atlas V rocket occurred last month. The Atlas V, built by Lockheed Martin, is the first rocket in the U. S. Air Force's Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle program. Rockets in this program can carry increasingly heavy payloads by just adding more boosters. In fact, the only US expendable rocket capable of lifting more was the Saturn V that carried people to the Moon. Atlas rockets have a reputation for being extremely reliable -- the current launch was the 61st consecutive successful launch for an Atlas. Highlighted in the inset is the small RocketCam camera that sent back pictures from the rocket during launch.

Two CrossLink RocketCam™ systems have provided launch-to-orbit onboard views during the inaugural launch of the Atlas 5 rocket. CrossLink has since sold the cameras to a company called Ecliptic which is a supplier to Lockheed Martin. The launch was a complete success, taking Eutelsat's Hotbird 6 comsat from Cape Canaveral and placing it into the desired transfer orbit. Both RocketCam™ cameras captured dramatic views looking aft: one from outside the Atlas 5's second-stage skin and one from inside the aft end of the second stage.

In the words of Don Spencer as the voice of Atlas Mission Control,
"You can hear the cheering here at the Atlas Space Flight Operations Center with very, very dramatic video — stunning images from the cameras on the vehicle — showing the Common Core Booster, Atlas staging, RD-180 engine performance, MECO. You saw the engine operation from the onboard camera. We've got absolutely stunning images coming from these cameras!"

HOGr says: " wait till you see a shuttle launch if you want stunning.
