Most 11-12 year olds are too young for a real job, but make great "playmates" for younger kids if they are responsible.

I hired such a 12 year-old for 3 hours a day 5 days a week while I was in the house or running errands. She taught my 8 and 5 year old lots of fun games, kind things to do for neighbors, occasionally helped around the house, read books with them,(they all lay in the sun reading their own thing...) made a playhouse, wrote a show etc...( we didn't allow TV)and was resposible for preparing a mid-morning snack.

It worked so well we hired her for several summers till she was old enough for the real job market. She felt like my older daughter. As she was one of 5 kids herself, her parents were pleased she could earn several hundred dollars. I had happy relaxed afternoons with the kids because I had done the housework, my studying etc.

I was glad to write her glowing references.

Try a pre teen before they get to a "silly" stage. They are eager to do a good job.
