I grew up in Illinois and I'm still boggled at Blago's chutzpah. Us downstaters viewed Chicago politics as a spectator sport, although an occasional downstate pol got his. (Paul Powell (Vienna) died unexpectedly and people found something like $800k in shoe boxes from Sec. of State license fees.)

This article has an interesting discussion of political corruption. One of the more interesting items is this list.

The publication Corporate Crime Reporter crunched Department of Justice statistics in 2007 to rank the 35 most populous states of the nation by corruption. The publication calculated a corruption rate, which it defined as the total number of public corruption convictions from 1997 to 2006 per 100,000 residents.
