It’s downright cold around much of the country this week—so cold that you might be better off staying indoors and watching a Disney movie! Of course you could argue that all Disney movies are heartwarming in one respect or another, but these 10 films always send us running for the couch, a cup of steaming hot cocoa in one hand, a remote control in the other.

What Disney movie would most warm you up this weekend?

In writing Pinocchio: The Making of the Disney Epic [out May 26, 2015 on Walt Disney Family Foundation Press], I had the opportunity to study the production of Pinocchio in depth. One of the most fascinating aspects of the film was the special effects—both effects animation and photographic effects. Added to the brilliant character animation, these effects gave the film an extra layer of luxurious production value. Some of them, like the spectacular moving-camera scene that moves over the rooftops and down into the street, are famous in themselves, but others are sometimes overlooked. I’ve picked out five scenes that used special, innovative techniques. Next time you watch Pinocchio, take a closer look at these fascinating moments on the screen:

Modern style and sensibility, the suspense of a 1960s spy thriller, British characters and settings, top Disney animation, and a kennel-full of colorful canine characters… all prized qualities of one of my favorites, Walt Disney’s One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961). Follow my lead and you’ll sniff out the reasons I think this classic Disney film is spot-on.

Who wonders whether it's Pinocchio, 101 Dalmatians or some other Disney movie that you turn to when a warm fire isn't enough to break through the winter doldrums...
