Mr Fungi: We took the train from Padua to Venice today, a short trip of less than 30 minutes. It’s not quite high season yet, but the main walkways of Venice were fairly crowded, nonetheless. By around 3:30, however, most of the crowd had departed—possibly day trippers had boarded their cruise ships by then. The major sites of the city are certainly impressive, but the endless stretches of jewelry shops, pizzerias, bakeries, clothing stores, and souvenir stands gets to be a bit tedious. I’m glad to have visited Venice, but all in all it didn’t make me want to return—as, e.g., Paris, Dublin, Budapest, Amsterdam, and a good many other places have.

Depending upon the weather, we’ll probably spend the day tomorrow in Verona, perhaps stopping in Vicenza along the way. The day after that, we’ll train to Siena, where we’ll stay for 5 nights.

I was stationed in Vicenza for 18 months*. Saw Venice twice - that was plenty. 30 minute train ride.

In Vicenza see the Teatro Olympico - has amazing "Depth of field/perspective" niches. Perspective was all the rage at that time. Vicenza is the city of Paladio. Lots of his architecture to be seen.

... ok, it was half a century ago.
